PATRIARCHAL NATIVITY SERMON by Retired Patriarch Irenaios I

Beloved children in the Lord, Grace and peace be to you from God Almighty. Again the joyful day rises of the great and Holy Christmas. And again an opportunity is given to us to communicate spiritually, during which we send a warm greeting of Christ who is born, and we bestow Our Patriarchal blessing. Come therefore, to venerate and fall down before Christ and to enjoy the unspeakable miracle of the divine incarnation. We journey together with the shepards to Bethlehem and we find the Son of the Most High laying in a manger. We reverently stand before the Sacred Cave, in which hospitality was offered to the King of Creation and we recall the infinite love of God and His extreme condensation and humility. Humanity awaited nervously His arrival. The Prophets spoke of this. The most loud-voiced Prophet Isaiah, writing concerning the Messiah, said: “For a child will be born to us, a son will be given to us”. The words of Angels expressed to Joseph the betrothed, the universal anticipation and mission of saving the world of Christ the Savior: “A son will be born and you will call his name Jesus. For he will save his people from their sins”. (Math. 1, 21) The joy of Christmas is an issue for all people, because God wants all people to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth. Under the cheerful light of the Star, all unfortunate things draw back, which overshadow the soul of a person; suffering, sighing, and the bitterness of injustice and of mourning. The tear upon the eyelid becomes a pearl. Pain is transformed to an educator, which guides the steps, there where the Son of God does not have a place to lay his head. From a Manger arises universal hope. Unfortunate are they who have not yet recognized the light and turn to replacements of joy, in order to satisfy the empty desires of their hearts. The Eternal One came to earth and transformed our transience. We have an eternal destination and from the ephemeral we go on to eternity. Faith in Christ gives wings to the soul, fortifies the weak person, and instills comfort into the suffering heart, as spring caresses with daybreak our foreheads. We are so small, poor, and fragile, as the reed in the dessert. Together with Christ we make strong roots, the winds and storms do not make us afraid, and we become an unconquerable tower. “For a child will be born to us”. In a Manger, Love is wrapped in swaddling-clothes, and since “God is Love” (1 John: 4, 8), humanity is flooded with this great blessing, which is taught for the first time. “God was shown in the flesh” (1Tim. 3:16), in order for us to know and believe in Him. The light of the world came, so that we may walk in the light and know the truth “and the truth will set us free” (John 8:32). This being said, it is not necessary for us to expound on how much the world has distanced itself from the spirit of Bethlehem. Pain, need, and misfortune have not yet been allowed to be conquered, irregardless of the wondrous bounds of contemporary science and culture. Much-desired peace remains unthinkable and the specter of war did not cease to be misguided over humanity, while sin vastly shows its insolent and impudent head. Evil has unfortunately abounded in our time, justice strangled; truth is portioned and twisted, even in the bosom of the most-holy Church of Christ. The position of a person is tragic and lamentable. A great effort will be needed for the re-evangelizing of the Christians, and also the restoration of its terribly tried validity, by attempts and acts of people of the respectable and historical Patriarchate of Jerusalem who don’t follow the way of the star of Bethlehem. We suffer upon confirming that peace and God’s justice have not reigned in the earth and even more so amongst the order of people where there should be one heart through love in Christ. However we study and are watchful that Christ may be formed in our hearts, because only through Him may reign peace, and reconciliation between Peoples, respect and love in the relations between persons, as well as the much-desired unity and calmness within His Church. The shadows and the surges will reside, as all come and go. Only Christ will remain forever, because “Jesus Christ was yesterday, is today, and will be throughout time” (Hebr. 13, 8). During this sacred time, of the celebration of the great and light-filled feast of Christmas, we call the misguided ones “to come to the understanding of truth” and considering the size of their sin, to abandon the road of loss and illegality and to follow the way of the star of Bethlehem, joining with all of us, Our beloved spiritual children, as pilgrims of the Divine Infant in simplicity, humility, and repentance, to the glory of Christ the Born King, and the annihilation of evil. Upon this, embracing all of you in fatherly love, invoking richly the Grace of the incarnate God, and the joy that springs forth from the Cave that received God, and We remain, With fervent prayers to the Lord IRINEOS I Patriarch of Jerusalem From the Cave that received God in the Holy City of Bethlehem CHRISTMAS 2006 No sooner had the Wood of Thy Cross been set up, O Christ our Lord, than the foundations of Death were shaken. For He Whom Hades swallowed eagerly, it soon let go in trembling. Thou hast shown us Thy slvation, O Holy One, and we glorify Thee! Have mercy on us, O Son of God!

CANON: Tracing a Cross upon the waters, Moses marked out a straight line before him with his sstaff [pre-figuring the Cross] and divided the Red Sea, opening a path for Israel, which went through with dry feet. Then, he marked a second line across the waters, uniting them in one, overwhelming the chariots of Pharoah. Therefore, let us sing to Christ our God, for He is gloriously triumphant!

Troparion of the Feast
O Lord, save Thy people! And bless Thine inheritance! Grant victory to the Orthodox people over our Adversaries; and by the power of Thy Cross, preserve Thy habitation!

QUOTES FROM THE FATHERS

St. Ambrose, Elder of Optina (+1891) Prophecies of End Times: My child, know that in the last days hard times will come; and..heresies and schisms will appear in the churches; and as the Holy Fathers foretold, on the thrones of hierarchs and in monasteries there will be no men to be found that are tested and experienced in the spiritual life. ..The enemy of mankind will act skillfully, and whenever possible he will lead the chosen ones to heresy. He will not begin by discarding the dogmas on the Holy Trinity, the Divinity of Jesus Christ...but will [quietly] start to distort the Teachings of the Holy Fathers and the teachings of the Church herself.

in other words the teachings of the Church herself. The cunning of the enemy...will be noticed by very few--only those that are the most experienced in the spiritual life [those Spirit-filled"]. Heretics will...appoint their servants everywhere, and Faith will be neglected. But the Lord will not leave His servants without protection...Be also aware that, for some time, they might hide their evil intent, or they might covertly deform the Holy Faith...by tricking the inexperienced... [T]he devil who is directing the heresy, cannot stand the Divine order of right -believing hierarchs. Like wolves in sheep skin, they will be known by their vainglory, lust, and lust for power. All those will be betrayers, causing hatred and malice everywhere;...therefore the Lord told us that we will easily recognize them by their fruits. The true servants of God are Meek, loving their brothers in the Faith, and obedient to the [Holy Tradition] of the Church.

...The monastic families will be impoverished,...the ones remaining will endure violence. These haters of the monastic life, who have only the appearance of piety, will strive to draw monks to their side, promising them protection and worldly comforts, but threatening with exile those who do not submit to them. If you live to see that time, Rejoice, for...the faithful...will receive wreaths for remaining steadfast in their faith, according to the Lord "Everyone who confesses Me before men, I will confess before My Heavenly Father." Fear the Lord, my son, and don't lose this crown so as not to be rejected by Christ into the utter darkness...Woe to the monks tied to possessions and riches and...who agree to subjugate themselves to the heretics. They will lull their conscience by saying "We will save the monastery, and the Lord will forgive us." Blinded, they are not [realizing] that through heresies the devil will enter the monastery, and then it will no longer be a holy monastery, but bare walls [Heb: Ichabod] from which grace will depart forever.

...God is more powerful than the devil...He will never abandon His Servants. There will always be true Christians,...but they will choose lonely and deserted places. Do not fear this, but fear pernicious heresies, for they drive out the [Holy Spirit] and separate us from Christ...wherefore Christ commanded us to regard the heretic...as a heathen man and publican. So strengthen yourself, my son in the Grace of His Holy Spirit from Christ Jesus. With joy, hasten to confession and endure the suffering like Jesus Christ's good soldier who was told "Be faithful unto Death, and I will give you the crown of Life."

Readings for Feast of TRANSFIGURATION: [revealing to us a foretaste of glory of His 2nd Coming] On the holy mountain of Tabor, Christ with Moses and Elijah, reveals that God is the God of the living and the dead: Elijah living, Moses having reposed bodily, addressed the Apostles and cried out: "Behold the Savior! Behold Christ, Whom in ancient times we had foretold as the true God!"

My Prayer O Inaccessible Light, why have You cast me far from Your face? In my wretchedness, the alien darkness has covered me. Bring me back, I pray, and direct my paths toward the Light of Thy Law and Thy Holy Faith!

On Fasting: Jesus Himself fasted and taught His disciples to fast. "And when you fast, do not look dismal like the hypocrites, for they disfigure their faces that their fasting may be seen by men. Truly I say to you, they have their reward. But when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face, that your fasting may not be seen by men, but your Father who is in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you" (Matthew 6:16-18). The purpose of fasting is to gain mastery over oneself and to conquer the passions of the flesh. It is to liberate oneself from dependence on the things of this world in order to concentrate on the things of the Kingdom of God. It is to give power to the soul so that it would not yield to temptation and sin. According to St. Seraphim, fasting is an "indispensable means" of gaining the fruit of the Holy Spirit in one's life (cf. Conversation with Motovilov), and Jesus Himself taught that some forms of evil cannot be conquered without it (Matthew 17:21, Mark 9:29) Man does not fast because it pleases God if His servants do not eat, for, as the Lenten hymns of the Church remind us, "the devil also never eats" (Lenten Triodion). Neither do men fast in order to afflict themselves with suffering and pain, for God has no pleasure in the discomfort of His people. Neither do men fast with the idea that their hunger and thirst can somehow serve as a "reparation" for their sins. Such an understanding is never given in the scriptures or the writings of the saints which claim that there is no "reparation" for man's sin but the crucifixion of Christ. Salvation is a "free gift of God" which no "works" of man can accomplish of merit. (cf. Romans 5:15-17, Ephesians 2:8-9) Men fast, therefore, and must fast, only to be delivered from carnal passions so that the free gift of salvation in Christ might produce great fruit in their lives. Men fast so that they might more effectively serve God who loves them and has saved them in Christ and the Spirit. Fasting without effort in virtue is wholly in vain. "Why have we fasted, and Thou seest it not? Why have we humbled ourselves, and Thou takest no knowledge of it? Behold, in the day of your fast, you seek your own pleasure and oppress all your workers. Behold, you fast only to quarrel and fight...Fasting like yours...will not make your voice to be heard on high. Is not this the fast that I choose: to loose the bonds of wickedness...to let the oppressed go free…is it not to share your bread with the hungry, and bring the homeless poor into your house; when you see the naked, to cover them... Then shall your light break forth like the dawn, and your healing shall spring up speedily; your righteousness shall go before you, the glory of the Lord shall protect you. Then you shall call, and the Lord will answer; then you shall cry, and He will say: Here I am" (Isaiah 58:3-9). "Fasting in the body, 0 brethren, let us also fast from sin." This is the Church's song in the Lenten season of fasting. It is also the teaching of the saints...in fasting one must not only obey the rule against gluttony in regard to food, but refrain from every sin so that, while fasting, the tongue may also fast, refraining from slander, lies, evil talking, degrading one's brother, anger and every sin committed by the tongue. One should also fast with the eyes, that is, not look at vain things...not look shamefully or fearlessly at anyone. The hands and feet should also be kept from every evil action. When one fasts through vanity or thinking that he is achieving something especially virtuous, he fasts foolishly and soon begins to criticize others and to consider himself something great. "A man who fasts wisely...wins purity and comes to humility...and proves himself a skillful builder" (St. Abba Dorotheus, 7th c., Directions on Spiritual Training). Saint Paul himself fasted, and in his teaching on food insists that men fast and do so in secret, without mutual inspection and judgment. "Brethren, join in imitating me, and mark those who so live as you have an example in us. For many of whom I have often told you and now tell you with tears, live as enemies of the cross of Christ. Their end is destruction, their god is their belly, and they glory in their shame, with minds set on earthly things" (Philippians 3:17-19). All things are lawful for me, but not all things are helpful. All things are lawful for me, but I will not be enslaved by anything. Food is meant for the stomach, and the stomach for food - and God will destroy both one and the other. The body is not meant for immorality but for the Lord, and the Lord for the body" (I Corinthians 6:12-13). Let not him who eats despise him who abstains, and let not him who abstains, pass judgment on him who eats, for God has welcomed him. Who are you to pass judgment on the servant of another? He who observes the day, observes it in honor of the Lord. He also who eats, eats in honor of the Lord, since he gives thanks to God; while he who abstains, abstains in honor of the Lord and gives thanks to God. "Do not let what you eat cause the ruin of him for whom Christ has died...for the Kingdom of God does not mean food and drink, but righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit, he who thus serves Christ is acceptable to God and approved by men. Do not for the sake of food destroy the work of God…the faith that you have keep between yourself and God...whatever does not proceed from faith (whether eating or abstaining) is sin" (cf. Romans 14). The spiritual fathers, as strictly ascetic as they were, are very clear in their teaching about fasting. They insist with the Lord and the scriptures that men must fast in order to be free from passions and lust. But they insist as well that the most critical thing is to be free from all sin, including the pride, vanity and hypocrisy which comes through foolish and sinful fasting...eating beyond the point of being satisfied is the door of madness through which lust enters, for the belly is the queen of passions which man serves as a slave. But you, firm in this knowledge, choose what is best for you, according to your own powers...for the perfect person, according to Saint Paul ought both "to be full and be hungry...and do all things through Christ who strengthens us" (Philippians 4:12-13). "Thus a man who strives for salvation...must not allow himself to eat to fullness...but should still eat all kinds of food so that on the one hand he avoid boastful pride and on the other not show disdain for God's creation which is most excellent...Such is the reasoning of those who are wise!" (St. Gregory of Sinai, Instruction to Hesychasts). St. Isaac of Syria says, "Meager food at the table of the pure cleanses the soul of those who partake from all passion...for the work of fasting and vigil is the beginning of every effort against sin and lust...almost all passionate drives decrease through fasting." For the holy fathers taught us to be killers of passions and not killers of the body. "Partake of everything that is permissible with thanksgiving, to the glory of God and to avoid boastful arrogance; but refrain from every excess" (The Monks Callistus and Ignatius, 14th C., "Directions to Hesychasts"). If such is the teaching to hesychast monks, it is certainly applicable to all Christians as well. The whole essence of the matter is put simply and clearly in these two short stories from the fathers of the desert. A certain brother brought fresh loaves of bread and invited his elders. When they had eaten much, the brother, knowing their travail of abstinence, began humbly to beg them to eat more. "For God's sake, eat this day and be filled." And they ate another ten. Behold how these that were true monks and sincere in abstinence did eat more than they needed, for the sake of God. Epiphanius, bishop of Cyprus, called the abbot Hilarion to see him. A portion of fowl was set before them and the bishop invited the abbot to eat. The old man said, "Forgive me, Father, but since the time I took this habit I have never eaten anything that has been killed." And Epiphanius said to him, "And from the time I took this habit I have let no man sleep who has anything against me, and neither have I slept holding anything against anyone." And the old man said to him, "Forgive me, Father, for your way of life is greater than mine" (The Sayings of the Fathers) [from the OCA website on "Fasting"].

ON TEARS
Diadochus of Photice wrote about the sweetness of tears. St. John Climacus called repentance a second baptism and even stated that this baptism is greater than the first one. Symeon states clearly: "Those who, after baptism ...do not know that they have put on Christ and do not see the Light of His Godhead in the Light of the Holy Spirit...will find that they have broken the covenant of baptism either completely or in part. If not, they have at least buried the talent of holiness and adoption as sons of the Father that was given to them...Therefore, they have been deprived of the vision of the Father; for He does not lie and does not refuse His gifts [of the Holy Spirit]. Indeed He said, "He that keeps my commandments LOVES Me, and I will show Myself to him." Therefore, let us bathe ourselves with tears of repentance over our weaknesses and sins, asking the Loving Saviour Jesus Christ to grant us His great Mercy and so enable our hearts to love and cherish Him and our neighbors IN Him. Bishops, Hierarchs, all clergy and confessors are admonished by this saint that they must have EXPERIENCED this personal Pentecost, the baptism of tears by the Holy Spirit, or they are NOT FIT to care for the flock of the Lord Jesus, the Chief Shepherd. Let us pray individually to Christ, crying and saying "O LORD, FILL ME WITH THINE ALL-HOLY SPIRIT LEST I BE LOST AND NAKED ON THE LAST DAY BEFORE THY THRONE"!

["The difference is that instead of dirt and poison, we have rather chosen to fill our hives with honey and wax, thus furnishing mankind with the two noblest of things, which are Sweetness and Light." ed.]
